Lime plaster – a building material with tradition and future

Lime plasters consist of a mixture of calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime) and sand. Pure mineral lime was already used as a building material in Mesopotamia around 10,000 BC. In classical antiquity, lime plaster was used for the construction of cultural sites. The Romans brought the building material to Central Europe. Lime plaster still has a lasting influence on architecture today, mainly in the countries of the Mediterranean region.

This tradition has prevailed because fully mineral walls with a lime finish have a positive effect on the indoor climate in many ways: they prevent the mould growth and, thanks to their natural moisture balance, ensure a healthy indoor climate, i.e neither too dry nor too humid.

Lime plaster is particularly recommended for rooms with high humidity rate, like kitchens, bathrooms, sleeping rooms and children’s rooms.

Lime has a natural alkalinity (high pH value) and is therefore antiseptic. Mould does not find a breeding ground on lime plaster. The pores of the plaster have the potential to absorb and break down pollutants from the air. In addition, excess moisture is extracted from the room air and later released again.
