Post-applied thermal insulation in the preservation of historical monuments (interior and exterior)

In the preservation of historical monuments, it is advisable to improve the thermal insulation when renovating the facade, without necessarily using insulation panels. In this case, a mineral thermal insulation render can be used. Another possibility is to insulate the interior rooms with a thermal insulation plaster. Up to 5 cm thickness, the insulation works can be carried out without verification of the U-value (heat transfer coefficient). Greater thicknesses should be calculated beforehand with a simulation program like WUFI or similar (for calculating the coupled heat and moisture transport in building components).

Simple & safe to the goal

  1. Check of substrate

    1. Knock-off the whole old, non-load-bearing render.

  2. 2. Scrape out non load-bearing masonry joints.

  3. Substrate preparation

    3. Clean the whole facade.

  4. Application

    4. Spray/apply the insulating render weber.therm 500 HDP or the normal-setting stipple coat weber.san 160 WTA full-surface.

  5. 5. Up to a thickness of 40 mm weber.therm 505 HDP can be applied in one layer; for thicker applications up to 100 mm, it must be applied in several layers.

  6. 6. After a waiting time of 1 day per cm apply a full-surface reinforcement layer of approx. 5 - 8 mm thickness consisting of the bonding and reinforcing mortar weber.therm 300 and the reinforcement fabric weber.therm 310.

  7. 7. In the case of thick-layer overlay renders, like the mineral coarse-graded scratch top render weber.top 204 AquaBalance, the reinforcement layer is combed horizontally with a notched trowel.

  8. 8. Depending on the type of overlay render and weather conditions, the reinforcement layer must be pre-wetted or pre-treated with the universal primer weber.prim 403.

  9. 9. The overlay render is hand or machine applied.

  10. 10. Depending on type of topcoat render roughen the surface with an appropriate tool.
