Renovation of old clinker facades

Clinker facades can be rendered using different methods, depending on the clinker. As with other methods of facade renovation, a thorough examination of the substrate is necessary.

Check of substrate

1. Check if the clinker facade and also the joint network is load-bearing.
2. Non-load-bearing facing brickwork is fixed with the specific dowels weber.therm Verblendsanierdübel VSD for renovation of such brickwork.
3. The complete facade is cleaned with a high-pressure cleaner.
Preliminary works

4. Check the substrate porosity via wetting test.
5. In case of high-porosity substrates (water is soaked immediately) the silicate fixative weber.prim 406 can be used as primer.
6. The normal-setting stipple coat weber.san 160 WTA and after adequate standing time the lightweight lime-cement underlay render weber.dur 132 can be applied.
Alternative: apply the lightweight underlay reinforcing mortar weber.therm 376.
Application

7. In case of very poorly absorbent clinkers, apply a combed bonding layer of approx. 5 mm like weber.dur 101 or weber.therm 370. After at least 5 days, a lightweight underlay (base coat) such as weber.dur 132 can be applied on top.
8. In areas with openings (e.g. windows), use the reinforced arrow-shaped glass-fiber meshcloth weber.therm 315 for diagonal reinforcement of angles. In case of cracks, work according to the recommendations as above.
9. In case of glazed clinker bricks, a fabric meshcloth should be inserted full-surface into the combed bonding layer and fixed with suitable dowels (4 pieces/m2) whilst the pre-said layer is fresh.
10. Depending on type of overlay render and weather conditions, the reinforcement layer must be eventually pre-wetted or pre-treated with the universal primer weber.prim 403.
11. The overlay render is applied either by machine or by hand. Depending on the render type, the surface is textured or scraped with a suitable tool.
12. Instead of a build-up with weber.dur 132 (lightweight underlay render) and overlay render a full-surface combed bonding layer like weber.dur 101 can be used. After at least 5 days, the overlay render is applied directly on top.
