Tile fixing, waterproofing, impact sound-insulating and de-coupling with only one product
Tiles or natural stone are and remain the predestined surfaces for balconies and terraces. The problem: Weather influences such as frost, rain and sun gnaw at conventional balconies and terrace structures. Water penetrates through damaged grout. The tile adhesive mortar absorbs the penetrating water and stores it. The stored water freezes, increases in volume and destroys the structure. Spalling and loose tiles are the result. In line with the slogan: a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, Saint-Gobain Weber has focused on the tile adhesive mortar, especially in this field of application. A watertight tile adhesive that can also be used as a waterproofing compound offers maximum safety as a system and significantly reduces the risk of efflorescence.
Simple & safe to the goal
-
Substrate preparation
1. After checking the substrate (see the application tip "Check of substrates"), prime the substrate and prepare it for the next work steps. The components of the sealing system under tiles weber.tec 828 (sealing tape, prefabricated inner and outer corners, etc.) are bonded in the angles (wall/floor connection area) with the 2-comp. waterproofing, tile adhesive and de-coupling system weber.xerm 844 and overcoated with the same material at the perimeter areas.

Application on floor
1. The floating-buttering method is recommended for works outdoors in order to avoid most voids and achieve the best contact surface between tile backside and substrate (full saturation bedding). This depends upon the size and backside of the tiles or slabs. Moreover, this method of installation additionally contributes to the watertightness of the overall construction. This prevents moisture penetration of the construction and minimizes the risk of efflorescence.

Application on wall
The installation of ceramic wall coverings is also possible without further preparation with weber.xerm 844. For increasing its stability in case of larger and heavier tiles and slabs, the consistency of weber.xerm 844 can be optimized by adding the silica sand weber.sys Hartquartzmaterial (grain size 0.1 - 0.5 mm) in a ratio of max. 1 : 1 by weight.

Expanded recommendations for weber.xerm 844 on critical substrates
Cracks in tile or natural stone coverings are often caused by shape changes of the substrate.
Substrates like concrete or screeds "shrink" during their setting process, as do floating screeds and heated screeds.
Therefore, materials that change relatively strongly in comparison to the "rigid tile" during moisture or temperature variations are to be considered as critical.
These include, in particular, mixed substrates and wooden substrates (particleboard or pressed board), but also young cement or anhydrite screeds.
Depending on the requirements and degree of optimization, a de-coupling according to the "Simple & Safe" principle can be realized with weber.xerm 844 for each performance level: -
Performance level 1
- Critical substrate
- 1 mm de-coupling layer with weber.xerm 844
- Tile fixing with weber.xerm 844
- Ceramic tiles or natural stones
-
Performance level 2
- Critical substrate
- 1 mm de-coupling layer weber.xerm 844 with weber.sys 835 (woven glass fiber mesh for tile adhesives and floor compounds)
- Tile adhesive weber.xerm 844
- Ceramic tiles or natural stones
-
Performance level 3
- Critical substrate
- Bonding mortar weber.xerm 844
- Impact sound insulation and de-coupling mat)
- weber.sys 830 (impact sound insulation and de-coupling mat)
- Tile adhesive weber.xerm 844
- Ceramic tiles or natural stones
