External thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) are indispensable in building renovation today and also a common option for efficient thermal insulation in new buildings. With weber.therm circle, Saint-Gobain Weber has developed an ETICS that is not only fully mineral, non-combustible and resistant to algae infestation, but can initially be dismantled and recycled.

What is a fully mineral external thermal insulation composite system?

A distinction is made between mineral and fully mineral WDS. In a fully mineral external thermal insulation composite system, all components, such as bonding and reinforcing mortar, insulation material and overlay render (topcoat) are made of natural mineral raw materials; in a mineral system, an organic overlay render in pasty (wet) form can also be used. The insulation material mineral wool is mainly made of feldspar, dolomite and sand. Bonding mortars and overlay renders like a mineral scratch render consist of quartz sand, hydrated lime, white cement and Jura grains. Ideally, the building wall is also made of mineral building materials, such as brick or pumice. This results in a homogeneous wall structure that is advantageous in terms of building physics. The outstanding technical properties of the raw materials reliably protect the masonry from the weather effects.  A major advantage of mineral ETICS is their diffusion openness, i.e. their permeability to water vapour. An external wall stands in a moisture balance with the indoor and outdoor air. The usual penetrating moisture can escape unhindered. Thanks to this balanced moisture management, mineral external thermal insulation composite systems ensure a healthy living climate with pleasant temperatures, neither too dry nor too humid indoor air and a significantly reduced risk of mould. Another important advantage of mineral ETICS is their non-combustibility. This is obvious because one remember that their components are for ex. sand, dolomite or white cement. Mineral external thermal insulation composite systems, such as weber.therm A 100 and A 200 are categorized in building material class A and therefore offer the highest possible protection against the spread of domestic fires.

In addition, mineral ETICS are more eco-friendly than other systems due to their natural composition. The two mineral premium external thermal insulation composite systems weber.therm A 100 and A 200 of the manufacturer Saint-Gobain Weber with an insulation thickness ≥ 140 mm are the first ETICS systems to be awarded the well-known "Blue Angel" eco-label.

Zero Waste – The first fully recyclable external thermal insulation composite system

The system is mechanically fixed to the wall without bonding mortar. A separation fabric mesh embedded in the specially developed basecoat render ensures that it can be completely dismantled and separated by type of material. During dismantling, the render layer is first cut open in a grid pattern, then the separating fabric is grabbed by the excavator shovel and removed cleanly in strips together with the render. The individual components - insulation material, steel and plastic screw dowels, fabric woven mesh and mineral render mortar - can thus be sorted and recycled type by type. 

Conventional ETICS cannot yet be recycled. As the term "composite system" suggests, the system components like bonding mortar, insulation material, reinforcing mortar and topcoat render normally form a solid unit. This means that the components can no longer be separated type by type at the end of their service life; however, this is a prerequisite for recycling. Valuable raw materials and grey energy are thus lost after a single use; the ETICS must be disposed of as mixed construction site waste after dismantling. The development of a system that can be separated by type and thus recycled is therefore an important step towards a circular economy in construction.

The system is approved by the building authorities and has already won several prizes and awards, including the Bundespreis ecodesign 2019, the architects darling 2019 and, most recently, the German Design Award 2021.

Long-term nice facades without wash-out biocides

The innovative AquaBalance facade renders permanently prevent the growth of algae and fungi on the facade. While other renders contain biocides that are harmful to the environment and health in order to kill the algae, AquaBalance renders utilize a natural active principle and can therefore dispense with biocides. Biocides are washed out of the facade by rain after a short time. As a result, their protective effect disappears, and algae and fungi can sprout again unhindered.

AquaBalance renders, on the other hand, have a lasting effect, significantly extending intervals between renovations. For this sustainable and eco-friendly mode of action, AquaBalance renders were already honoured with the Climate and Environment Innovation Award by the Federal Ministry for the Environment in 2013.

Long-lasting and eco-friendly algae protection also for old buildings

Saint-Gobain Weber offers paint for existing buildings with a proven and eco-friendly mode of action. The new renovation paint weber.ton reno AquaBalance based on silicone resin is suitable for painting of all types of old topcoat renders and paints on facades. It is characterized by a strong opacity and high colour stability with an elegant silk-matt appearance. Furthermore, its permeability to water vapour is high (water vapour diffusion according to EN 1062-1: V1 high)

Design with lime plaster and breathe easily

The demand for natural and healthy building materials is constantly increasing. Many people want the security of not being exposed to any environmentally harmful or unhealthy influences, especially within their own four walls. Lime plaster is the ideal building material for this. It naturally regulates room humidity - so the indoor air is neither too dry nor too damp. In addition, its alkalinity inhibits the growth of mould, which is not only unsightly but also harmful, especially for small children and allergy sufferers.

Saint-Gobain Weber offers a complete, lime-based interior plaster system. The interior plaster is not only healthy for living, but also produces elegant, attractive wall surfaces with a grain-to-grain texture. The lime plasters are antiseptic and therefore mould-inhibiting and also totally emission-free (without volatile organic compounds - VOC). They absorb excess moisture from the room air, bind volatile pollutants and thus ensure a pleasant and healthy indoor climate.

Mould protection

Current studies show that around one in five homes in Germany has moisture damage due to inadequate ventilation. Almost half of these are already infested with mould, which can be harmful to health – especially for small children, the elderly and allergy sufferers. The organic interior plaster system of Weber offers effective protection here.

Lime plaster surfaces are not only healthy for living, they are also very much in vogue in modern interior design. Interior walls with high-quality plasters support both a minimized functional interior design and warm, mediterranean interiors. The different textures, the variety of colour highlights and the numerous application methods give each lime plaster surface a unique appearance. Every wall is unique. Individual lime plaster walls can be created by using various plaster textures, grain sizes, colors and finishing techniques.

Saint-Gobain Weber offers its customers a full range of lime-based indoors plasters. The more harmonious the structure of the wall coating is, the more effectively the functional benefits of the building material come into their own. The interior plaster system includes all products from various basecoat plasters to topcoat plasters, lime skimcoats and lime paints. Saint-Gobain Weber has also been offering a hybrid plaster range - weber pluscalc - since 2020, which combines the physical advantages of lime plasters with a particularly easy workability
