Renovation of balconies or terraces in one day

Often, old tile coverings in outdoor areas still have sufficient load-bearing capacity and are firmly bonded to the substrate. Removal of the covering would unnecessarily burden the renovation costs, noise and dirt pollution and significantly extend the working time. With sufficient slope, the waterproofing and de-coupling membrane weber.tec 826 ideally allows renovation to be carried out in one day, as drying and waiting times are reduced to a minimum. In addition, the system de-couples the covering from the substrate, thus relieving stresses and bridging any hairline cracks that may be present. For example, the balcony covering can be renovated without having to remove the tiles.

Simple & safe to the goal

  1. Preliminary works

    1. Carefully remove adhesion-impairing contaminants from the surface.

  2. 2. Existing defects are levelled out with the quick-setting levelling and repair mortar weber.plan 818.

  3. 3. Use the primer weber.prim 801 on absorbent substrates or weber.prim 803 on non-absorbent ones.

  4. Application

    1. Existing front sides (if any) are waterproofed with the perforated sealing tape weber.tec 828 DB G. It is bonded with the quick-setting and flexible flow-grade tile adhesive weber.xerm 860 F or the 2-comp. waterproofing and tile adhesive weber.xerm 844. If necessary, glue and dowel a tile finish profile.

  5. 2. The sealing and de-coupling membrane weber.tec 826 can be easily cut with a sharp knife or scissors. When laying, ensure that the joints run in the direction of the slope.

  6. 3. Apply the tile adhesive weber.xerm 860 F or weber.xerm 844 in a uniform adhesive bed and comb with the notched trowel (notch size 6 mm) at an angle of 45° - 60°.  Press the waterproofing and de-coupling membrane in the fresh layer of adhesive with a flat trowel. Lay the membrane with butt joints.

  7. 4. The areas with butt joints are waterproofed with the pre-cut membrane strip weber.tec 826 (15 cm width). To do this,  weber.xerm 844 or weber.xerm 860 F are applied again with a notched trowel to the width of the pre-said membrane strip.

  8. 5. Afterwards, the perforated sealing tape weber.tec 828 DB G is inserted into the fresh layer of adhesive; press and smooth down with a flat trowel so that excess mortar residues are removed.

  9. 6. In corners, expansion joints, butt joints and movement joints first insert all the necessary components of the sealing system weber.tec 828 (such as sealing tape as well as inner and outer corners) into the fresh layer of the tile adhesive weber.xerm 844 or weber.xerm 860 F. Lay the sealing tape with an overlapping of approx. 5 - 8 cm.

  10. Tile fixing

Tiles are fixed with weber.xerm 844/860 F or 859 F (temperature-independent setting flexible adhesive) in order to achieve an optimal bond and a bedding of the tiles with low voids. Before a skin starts to form slide the tiles into the fresh mortar bed and press down. Scrape the joints before the tile adhesive hardens.

  11. Grouting

    1. After hardening of the tile adhesive, the joints between tiles can be grouted with e.g. the flexible grout weber.fug 877.

  12. 2. Connection and movement joints must be closed with the elastic silicone joint sealant weber.fug 880 or weber.fug 881. In case of natural stones, use the specific sealant weber.fug 883. For better bonding, use the primer weber.fug 884 (absorbent joint sides) or weber.fug 885 (non-absorbent joint sides).
